Our last newsletter led with a cover page which stated Optimism, Hope, Joy and New Beginnings and this was in reference to a recovery from the demands and challenges of the COVID19 pandemic, floods and the associated impacts on people and the economy.

At this stressful time your people need as much support as possible to cope with the demand of work and the balance that is associated with other responsibilities and commitments.

Under Australian Legislation employers must take reasonable steps to protect people against risks to their physical and mental health.
Although of course not compulsory nor a legislative requirement a wellness program can clearly show a commitment to assist your people meet those needs.

The objective of a Workplace Wellness program are many but they are primarily designed to ensure that there is a strategy to improve employee alignment, culture and to keep your people healthy and productive.

These initiatives traditionally focused on physical health benefits but now are far more encompassing with the overall goal of ensuring that your people are engaged and in line with the goals of the organisation.

This then results in a strategy of overall wellbeing which only aids you in running a successful business.

A wellness program can include such initiatives as a supportive culture, health initiatives, mental health, flexible working arrangements, career development, health education programs, work life balance, stress management education, smoking cessation programs, exercise programs, wellness assessments, fun individual and team challenges, health and wellness competitions, cooking classes, yoga, tai chi and other programs including reward and recognition initiatives just to name a few.

There are numerous benefits achieved by the introduction of a wellness program within the workplace, but this will not work unless it has the necessary management support and engagement.

These include but are certainly not limited to:
  • An increase in staff engagement, alignment, culture and morale
  • Increasing teamwork within the team which leads to a more tolerant workplace
  • Able to be more focused which can lead to an improved service delivery model
  • A great ability for resilience for both the individual and within the team
  • An appreciation that management are willing to invest in their people
  • Reduced sick leave
  • A healthier workforce with an increase in overall wellbeing
  • A reduction in overall stress levels and correspondingly less claims
  • Reduced staff turnover as your people appreciate the program and therefore a direct savings in expensive recruitment and associated costs
  • Striving for an employer to be recognized as an employer of choice
We at CMSolutions have experience in developing people wellness programs and we will be providing much more information in Part 2 and 3 of this article where we will discuss wellness initiatives in detail and also how to establish and design a wellness program.

Employees Aged Under 18 & Paying Superannuation

For most employees, Australian businesses are required to pay an employee super on top of that person’s wage if the employee earns more than $450 (before taxes) in a calendar month.
If an employer has employees who are under 18 years of age, then the employee must also work more than 30 hours per week to qualify for their Super contributions.

You must pay super for an employee ages 18 years if they:
  • Are under 18 years of age
  • Are paid $450 or more before tax in salary and wages in a calendar month
  • Work more than 30 hours a week
  • Are not exempt under another exemption criteria
However some major changes are coming, see later article in the Newsletter

The difference between Coaching & Mentoring

Pat has drawn up an article about what the differences are between Coaching and Mentoring. Pat has outlined that coaching and mentoring are two popular approaches that aim to help individuals to grow, develop, and achieve their full potential. Some people combine the two methods and use the terms interchangeably. There are crucial differences which need to be understood before deciding whether one or both methods would be useful in a particular situation.

Changes to Super Guarantee Threshold

From 1st July 2022

$450 Month Superannuation Threshold Abolished
From 1st July 2022 employers must pay super Guarantee on every dollar earnt, including the first $450. Treasury Laws Amendment (Enhancing Superannuation Outcomes For Australian and Helping Australian Businesses Invest) Bill 2021 – Parliament Australia)

Previously, employers did not need to pay SG if the employee did not earn $450 per month.

Now, some workers will receive super contributions from their employers for the first time.

We recommend employers with staff currently earning below $450 each month to start preparing now.
  • Bookkeepers and BAS Agents can assist employers in budgeting for these increases and ensure that employers are meeting compliance requirements with super for employees.
  • Employers will need to ensure they are STP compliant and
  • Follow the Super Choice Form provision and potentially the Stapled Fund process when employing staff.
The superannuation guarantee is currently set at 10%, as of 1st July 2022 the rate increases to 10.5%.

Can not for profit organisations make a profit?

Not for profit organisations are like any other organisation, the only difference is that any profit made goes back into the organisation.
      not for profit image
You need to make sure you are financially viable, to cover expenses, employee wages, tax obligations, prepare for expansion and of course you need to ideally have reserves in case of any emergencies.

If you are not covering your expenses, and maintaining a sustainable organisation, then you need to review and implement strategies to change your organisation around.

Are not for profits required to follow employment laws?

The answer is yes! If your organisation is a not for profit and employs staff, then your organisation is required to follow all employment laws and legislation.

Just because you are not for profit does not mean you can pay or employ your staff whatever way you want to. You have to employ your staff under the relevant award or enterprise agreement that covers your staff and can not contract out of these provisions.

Not for profit organisations are unique, but they are still required to follow all state and federal laws and legislation when employing staff. This also covers work health and safety laws.
